Educational Practices to Promote Inquiry-Based Learning for the 21st Century Inspired by the International Baccalaureate Program

Description

Educational practices vary widely across locations, reflecting changing contexts in time and place. Nonetheless, they all share an aim to nurture the continued wellbeing of the community they serve and address any problems that threaten this. This is true for local communities grouped for example, through ethnicity, religious beliefs, or nationality. Today, in the twenty first century however, despite our membership in local communities, we all belong to a single globalized community and therefore, as members, share worldwide problems that threaten our wellbeing. These problems include the climate crisis as well as those identified in the UN`s SDGs. What changes must be made to educational practices to address these shared threats? How do the required changes relate to current local educational practices? Answering such questions requires broad and deep reflections about the nature of knowledge and learning, about what kind of knowledge and learning we value, and about the relevant skills that must then be developed as a result of these reflections.

Course Summary

In this course we will engage in activities that consider the questions and reflections identified above, look at how they have answered conceptually by organizations such as the OECD and the Earth Charter, but also engage in practices of the IBO programmes that have a mission to make the world a better place through the development of international mindedness.

Course Content, Registration and Certifications

It is a free program on SEAMEO priority areas #5 for ʻRevitalizing Teacher Educationʼ and #7 for ʻAdopting 21st Century Curriculumʼ. CRICED, University of Tsukuba, Japan, provides the certifications to participants at the end of the course.
Each online lecture will be provided on a consecutive sequence based on the course roadmap. Participants cannot skip any lesson because each lesson uses ideas which were already discussed. At the end of each lesson, participants need to do a short questionnaire for knowing how the lessons worked. Only participants that answer the questionnaire will receive the URL for the next lecture. The feedback from participants is used for evaluation of the program and attendance confirmation, but not as an evaluation of the participants.

All the lessons will begin on Wednesday afternoon from 13:00 (Japan time GMT+9) through a live streaming via YouTube. Each lesson will be approximately 75 minutes long which include assessment.
Certificate will be provided for the participants who have completed all 4 assignments for the lesson by the set due date.
